Our program

Barry has coached for over 30 years, at all levels including the NHL, AHL, IHL, and ECHL, as well as European pro leagues. at the junior level, Barry has coached in the whl and ohl. With a strong passion for developing the youth and furthering the sport, Barry leads the jr Winterhawks program.

zach spent 13 seasons coaching collegiate hockey, most recently serving as the head coach at his alma mater, Marian university. Gaynor helped lead the program to 2x conference championship appearances, including the program's NCAA tournament berth for the first time ever in 27 years.
Zach has a passion for competition and bringing the best out of all of our athletes.

Andy has been with the usa hockey education program for over 10 years. Andy has been coaching youth hockey for over 30 years, specializing in development and positive, player-centered learning tactics.
Andy believes in developing the mental game and cognitive ability just as much as the on-ice work. Andy is dedicated to serving the youth and bringing forth

opportunity for the community.

Shelby played collegiately at concordia university-wisconsin. he's been coaching competitively for over 7 years, most recently being a collegiate head coach for 4 years before joining our jr Winterhawks coaching staff. Shelby brings an exuberant, high-energy feel to the game. athletes gravitate towards shelby and his relatability. shelby is a level 4 USA Hockey coach, and his drive is the passion to help and develop young hockey players in an area that needs it most.

Originally from the east coast, coach Preston played collegiately for Connecticut college in New London, ct. Prior to joining the jr Winterhawks organization in 2021, he spent 5 years on the bench for Bentley university, turning the team into a national championship contender. Coach Preston is passionate about giving young athletes a great foundation for the game.

max has an incredible passion for developing young defensive studs. his goal is to teach his goaltenders to embrace their unique athleticism and skills to advance their development.
over his 15 year coaching span, max most recently was an associate goalie coach in the la kings organization. growing up heavily involved in  the Pittsburgh penguins community, max has honed in his extensive ability to instruct goalies and share his experience.

Gustafson currently serves as the associate coach for the Portland Winterhawks. he's also very invested in the development of the youth hockey program as well as the coaches in our system. Gustafson previously served as the assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks, and in multiple leadership positions with the Winterhawks organization over the last 20 seasons.

Austen grew up playing hockey in the
portland metro area. Potter's passion for coaching grew at a very young age, becoming an intern coach at 16. Potter is a level 5 usa hockey coach, with a focus on developing elite goalies. Potter's genuine drive to be an asset to the youth and help young players achieve their dreams Is what make him such a special part of this team.

Ben’s playing background comes from USHL Blackhawks and Providence College where he won the East Coast Championship in 1996. As Ben's reputation as a skilled ice hockey instructor and trainer grew, he transitioned to a full-time career providing skating instruction and training programs for hockey players of all ages and skill levels, from youth and amateurs to NHL players and prospects.
